A voice-over, often abbreviated to VO in script notation, is a narrative technique in which a validated script is read by a talent and recorded, possibly for insertion over visual elements in a multimedia project.
The process consists of:
- Script preparation (translation, validation, formatting for recording);
- Voice casting (selection of suitable voice talents);
- Studio recording under the supervision of a director, native in the language recorded;
- Post production and QA (including editing of audio into individual audio files, optimisation of audio quality, compression and format conversions, exporting files into final format)
- Audio/Multimedia integration (integration of the audio file into multimedia)
- Recording to video: when recording a voice over on a video (like a marketing or a training video), the video is played in the studio while recording to ensure accurate synchronisation with visuals at the time of recording. This synchronisation can be simply matching the voice over with on screen text or actions, as well as more complex forms like lip synching on screen actors – as seen in a dubbed movie.
